Website Content Ideas

Executive Summary

Being an 'ideas man' can be quite a good thing, but ideas on their own are pretty worthless if you don’t turn them into something palpable which works for you and your business. There's not much point in having ideas listed in a notebook, gathering dust.

As a writer of web content and other material, I’ve always been told that coming up with ideas is one of the most important skills to have. There’s no disputing the fact that ideas are at the core of good writing and storytelling, but the truth is that most people find the process of brainstorming for ideas to be a real chore, even problematic.

We have all experienced the failed brainstorming session: scribbling ideas down only to erase them, procrastinating by making coffee or rearranging the papers on your desk, pulling hair, and growing impatient with the seeming inability to engage with our brains. Then, finally, that night -- just before you fall asleep -- in pops the idea you have been waiting for.

The truth is that the best ideas come when your mind is at ease, as relaxed as possible. ONe of the prime idea times turns out to be between the time you climb into bed and the time you fall asleep. This is not merely coincidence; the brain relaxes and gets ready for the subconscious to take over, and we become more open and more likely to get resolutions to our problems or outstanding issues. I can speak from personal experience about getting ideas as I am hiking in the woods, one of my favorite activities of all time. I never hike without a pad and pen in my backpack.

There are many ways and places to carry out research for new website content ideas. One of the most obvious places to look is at the websites of your direct competitors and also the websites covering your industry in a more general way.

One way to carry out your research is to use the Wordtracker and/or related online search tools. If you already have a skeletal idea and you want to flesh it out further, you could use the Wordtracker tools or similar online search tools. Simply enter the seed words or phrases which you feel summarize your idea, and the results will show you the related items that people have actually been searching for. This is one good way to hone your idea from the general to the more specific.

Another idea seeding tip: just look around you. We are living in an amazing age where the sharing of information has never been so pervasive in virtually all parts of our lives. We have 24-hour news channels, iPhones and Blackberries on which to receive Google Alerts, texts, and emails: and we have bloggers and citizen journalists feeding social media sites like Digg, StumbleUpon, Twitter, Facebook, and others with stories, videos, and podcasts. We are living in the midst of the biggest information boom in history as millions of ideas and theories are zipping across the Internet hourly, changing momentum and direction with every breaking story. This digital environment is a place where ideas are born and grow with incredible ease and speed.

You can pick up ideas from fellow bloggers, or scout the Internet’s social media sites. You can check out Digg anytime for a wealth of ideas. Google Alerts can be beneficial for idea creation and birthing because Google Alerts are concise, clear, and consistent. I also visit all of the favorite sites on my list (you have a list of blogs and other sites to visit weekly or monthly, right?), occasionally signing up for their newsletters to stay informed.

Here's the single best piece of advice I can offer regarding ideas: always have a way to record or document a sudden idea. If nothing else, then make sure you always have a one-dollar memo pad in your back pocket as well as a pen. Most modern phones have an audio recorder, though I prefer to write my ideas. When an idea pops into your head you should record it in a consistent manner. Now or later, spend additional time considering the idea from various perspectives or in various ways to encourage follow-up ideas. The documented or recorded idea can’t be left to lie dormant in a notebook or phone; either you will lose it, or someone else will come up with a similar idea and use it with amazing success!

It’s important not to ignore the seemingly small or less significant ideas. They may be fleeting, but these ideas should also be respected for their potential. Who knows, you could have a series of trifling ideas which, after some thought and logical progression are liberally applied, could make one outstanding idea.

Set aside some time to think, apart from bedtime. For me, it’s when I’m hiking in the woods. There are times when I truly think I could right the wrongs of the world as I hike along and my mind races through all sorts of issues and subjects, starting with whatever my default thought for the day happens to be. I know others who go jogging or walking on the treadmill and think things through; if only we had a subway in Nashville, we could do this on our daily commute.

Your thinking time does not necessarily have to correspond with exercise. The important thing is that you are able to emotionally relax and stretch those mental muscles; let your mind wander, let your brain do the work, and stop trying to force it. Let go; this is a process that cannot be pushed. I strongly recommend meditation as a way to train yourself to be ever mindful.

Becoming frustrated about something can serve as a seed for a good idea. How many times have you been the customer of a service which has left you underwhelmed, unimpressed, or even disappointed? How could the process have been improved? Are you the person to deliver a superior product or service? Can your business help solve the problem, using your expertise and skills? Pay attention to the products and services that surround you and try to spot the holes in their provision, customer service, range, and so on, and see if you can fill them.

Attending conferences, industry group meetings, and networking sessions can be good for generating ideas. Talking to people in your area of expertise can be beneficial in terms of identifying new directions in which to guide your business ideas and thinking.

When you think you have the seed of a good idea, concept, or vision, lay it on some trusted peers; after all, discussing ideas is probably the best way to develop them. Talk to your colleagues and other like-minded folks who could possibly help generate practical steps on how to turn a concept into reality.

It’s wise to listen and not get down if your partners and peers say it’s a bad idea. If you can’t sell the idea to your peers or friends, there is almost certainly something wrong with the concept.

Top 5 Sticky Ideas for Your Website - Content that Drives Visitors ...
Excerpt from Website: The term "sticky content" has become widely known. In short, it means that the content of your website will "stick" in the minds of your visitors, which translates into repeat visits.
